The History of Hardy's — Est. 1929
Hardy's has deep roots in Bordon's story — stretching back nearly a century to the very land on which it stands today. Discover the full history of one of Hampshire's most enduring independent landmarks.
9 September 1929
Edward James Hardy purchases freehold land on Bordon High Street from the War Department, establishing Bordon Motors. His wife Dorothy May Hardy runs D. Hardy Ladies Outfitter next door — a husband-and-wife business empire confirmed by the 1939 Kelly's Directory (Tel 18 Bordon).
1930s–1940s
The Hardy family businesses serve the garrison town through wartime — surviving clothing rationing, the Blitz, and Bordon's role as a key D-Day staging post in 1944.
Mid–Late 20th Century
The site evolves through successive stewards, adapting to post-war Britain and the changing retail landscape of a garrison town in transition.
2010
John and Jayne Brice convert the historic building into The Hardy's Shopping Centre. Jayne opens the Old Dairy Coffee Shop — the first community anchor tenant.
Today
A thriving community of 20+ independent businesses, run by the Brice family, serving a town in the midst of a £1 billion regeneration programme.
